Memorial Fund Grant History In 2000, after over 25 years of providing low-interest loans, the David R. Stern Memorial Fund also began making grants. These are some of the Fund's grant highlights: The Fund made its first grant in the fall of 2000 to the Jhai Foundation, which provides opportunities for American war veterans to interact with foreign war veterans and victims for their mutual healing. The grant allowed Lao and American war veterans to collect humanitarian supplies for refugees and launch an educational campaign around remaining unexploded U.S. ordinance (UXO) in Laos. In the spring of 2001, City at Peace - Los Angeles received a grant from the Fund to support their work for and by youth that uses the performing arts to teach and promote cross-cultural understanding and nonviolent conflict resolution. In the spring of 2002, the Fund made a grant to September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows to support the launch of a regional office of this organization founded and staffed by people who lost family members in the September 11th, 2001 tragedy and have turned the energy of their grief to work for peace and social justice in the U.S. and abroad. In 2003, the Fund awarded a grant to support and strengthen the technological, organizational and outreach capabilities of Activist San Diego, an alternative information network which provides a peaceful alternative voice to the military establishment of this city. Also in 2003, Marin County H.O.P.E., Inc., received a grant from the fund for general operating support of their programs, which provide youth with information about military recruitment practices and related legislation, alternatives to military enlistment and service, rights to privacy and nondisclosure of personal data, alternative means of financing post-secondary education, and nonmilitary career opportunities. |
